The Washington Post has challenging story today highlighting the details of informal mining in the DRC.
There are no easy answers. In the short-term, even the most responsible companies have a serious challenge in conveying how a well-run mine – which respects labor standards – will be better than the subsistence level of work that the interviewees now have. The article forces one to conclude that the mine has to be complemented by other government and development projects or you are almost certain to have serious opposition from displaced workers.
